Fit for life

Meet Right Start’s top happy and healthy children

We’re delighted to announce our two Fit for Life winners for 2011. They are three-year-old Isabelle Hutson from Fleet in Hampshire and Toby Lapthorne, also three, from Leeds

Isabelle and William both win a 10 days’ holiday for their families at one of Keycamp’s 100-plus European parcs, including return Dover/Calais ferry crossings.

It’s great to be making an award that celebrates children – and their families – who are doing their best to lead the sort of lifestyle that more of us should be leading. We at Right Start have been so impressed with the efforts that so many of our readers are making to give their children the happy, healthy childhoods which are their right.

Dave McKenna, head of brand at Keycamp comments: ‘Our holidays are the perfect opportunity for families to bond together, taking part in all manner of activities from canoeing to climbing and cycling. We’ve introduced a host of free extras for young families such as our Mini World parcs and Miffy mobile homes. Our free cycling lessons in partnership with Bike Right are new for 2011 and will help little ones get on two wheels for the first time.’

Isabelle’s mum, Bev Hutson, says:

‘With five brothers and two dogs, Isabelle certainly has an active lifestyle! In term time, we walk twice daily to take and collect the boys from school. It’s over a mile and takes us about an hour.

Isabelle’s dad is a teacher so we get plenty of family time during the school holidays and at weekends. We usually go on holiday with our caravan. Isabelle and her brothers love the outdoors and we do something physical every day, either walking the dogs, swimming or enjoying a family bike ride. Last summer, we walked the entire coastal path from Charmouth to Lyme Regis and back!

When we can, we love to go on a winter ski holiday. Isabelle had her first taste of skiing in February this year when she participated in the ski lessons. She’s a determined little girl, so needless to say it was a big success!

Isabelle loves her fruit and veg and only drinks water or milk. She attends Tumble Tots sessions and swimming lessons weekly and she throws herself with gusto into both.’

Toby’s mum, Janet Lapthorne, says:

‘The youngest of three children, Toby has always wanted to “keep up” with his brother and sister and join in with their activities. He’s happiest when he is playing games involving a ball, either football, rounders, tennis or just catch. He also loves riding his scooter and bike, swimming, running and going to the park. He might be only three, but he packs so much into life.

Last month, Toby attended his second “Big Toddle” in aid of Barnardos. Dressed as a spider, he ran the whole 1km course with his friend Maeve and reached the end before the organisers had put the finish tape out!

He has attended Tumble Tots in Roundhay, Leeds since he was nine months old and has really grown in confidence as a result. There, he has learnt to climb and balance safely and has just perfected his forward roll.

We recently built a greenhouse and Toby has really enjoyed growing beans, tomatoes, cucumbers and beetroot with me. He

often opts for an apple or a carrot as his choice of snack. That’s not to say he doesn’t love chocolate too!
